At some point in our lives, we are all going to experience some kind of discouragement. Discouragement can be caused by a multitude of reasons. There could be family relationship issues, financial pressure, job dissatisfaction, fatigue, failure, fear, frustration, unfulfilled expectations, current events, the list goes on and on. We need to be wary of the fact that discouragement left unchecked will lead to depression. Depression can be characterized as state of being “pressed down”, a sense of weight and heaviness that permeates a person’s mind and heart. You may be surprised at the number of young people dealing with depression.
In 2020 almost 22% of young people ages 16-17 had a major depressive episode. 18.2% of youth 14-15 years old. These are staggering statistics. It is hard for me to grasp that more than 1 in 5 kids we see walking around today are having to cope with major depressive episodes. These are reported cases, I wonder what the actual numbers are!
It has never been God’s desire to see his children in a state of depression. God understands the discouragement we face. He knows that in this life there will be tribulation:
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace; In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Don’t give up
As we continue to wait upon the Lord, there will come a moment when He speaks to you. He is always looking for us to be strong and to take courage because He understands what you are going through. Jesus experienced all of the same things we experience while He was on the earth, yet He entrusted Himself to His Father. He was always listening for His Father’s voice. Many people, throughout the centuries have listened for the voice of God to receive strength and encouragement. We need to do the same.
Still Speaking
The Lord is still speaking today. He wants to strengthen and encourage you today so that you can walk through any circumstance knowing that you are not alone. God has promised to be with you! Just one word from God can redirect your entire life to one of experiencing His peace and joy. If you listen, He will speak. Don’t give up!
I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! Psalms 27:13-14
