Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. Matthew 6:19-21
This 2000 year old scripture verse does seem relevant today when we turn on the news each night to watch thieves breaking in and stealing without fear of consequence. Surly we can change laws to help curtail some of the violence but for lasting change, hearts need to be renewed to the understanding that we have free access to a God who knows everything we need and has promised to supply it. We carry a message of hope for those who are struggling. In Psalm 37:35 it reads:
“I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.
So what is the message that we must declare? Receive the love of Jesus and be reconciled to God!
Where are we today? According to a 2003 joint poll (almost 20 years ago) by USA Today, CNN, and Gallup, 90% of Americans support the inscription “In God We Trust” on U.S. coins. Again in 2019 a student poll by College Pulse (3 years ago) showed that only 53% of students supported its inclusion in currency—Wikipedia. I’m sure if we polled today the numbers would be even lower. This gives us a glimpse into which way our nation is heading but take heart because the God we serve cannot be “canceled”. It’s time for the Ecclesia to be bold as we speak proclaiming that “In God We Trust” and that we will “Stand for Truth”.
